Dumb Stories IV: A New Hope
Since the last time we posted, the infamous Stark prophesy has come true. Winter WAS coming, and now winter has arrived. All the snow and rain and freezing cold have driven us indoors and made us focus on what’s really important: videogames song writing!
While we’ve been working hard on beating Gears of War 3 new songs, we’ve also been stuck on the water temple in Skyward Sword re-inventing our live set, and starting to seriously think about buying Skyrim and disappearing for the next few months the shape this new record is going to take.
Also, FYI, we’re pressing a new limited edition t-shirt for our show at The Mod Club on February 18th. It’s gong to be REALLY sexy.

Dumb Stories Season 2 Ep: 4 “Return To Skull Island”
Oh HAI Mark.
This weeks installment of dumb stories is, as usual, a comedy of errors. Except it’s not that funny. So.. it’s a DRAMA of errors. Ok i guess really it’s a Dramady of errors. Point is, there were errors. But i digress.
This week we have an announcement! Although we’d decided a month ago to “focus on writing” instead of “playing shows right now”, we were just offered a show that sounded like too much fun to turn down. The announce for the show is tonight, so we’ll give you all the details then. Before you ask: no it’s not in Victoria, Nanaimo, Prince George, or Berlin (but we love you all and we’ll come see you soon!). It’s in Toronto. The main reason we decided to play this date is that the venue has great sound, and it’ll be a perfect chance for us to try out A BUNCH OF NEW SONGS. Yup, we’re going to play at least three songs for the first time in front of anyone other than our (imaginary) cat. It’s going to be a party. Also, the show is going to be free. I’ve said too much. Announce is tonight!!
And now we come to the fabled “photo-blog” part of this “blog”. First we find some drinking, then an “artistic” photo of my one of favorite things (effects pedal). Then, the infamous DEAN RODE realizing he smelled like “hot garbage” after jam, but lacking deodorant he bathed himself with a Bounce dryer sheet. These are the days of our lives.

I want to take this opportunity to introduce to you a new weekly feature on our blog that we like to call “5 Second Update” (patent pending).
This idea was born from the realization that people hate watching long things on the internet. Including us. For those of you that are morbidly interested in our lives, we’ll continue posting “Dumb Stories” as well, but for those who just need a quick Theset fix between their second coffee and their Huffpost celeb lolz, THIS IS FOR YOU.
Essentially we will strive each week to sum up our progress in writing our new album within 5 seconds of brutally honest and telling video.

Dumb Stories #2
I know what you’re thinking. “How could Theset possibly write SO often on their blog!?”, and the answer is: we have interns. Actually, you probably weren’t thinking that.. and we don’t actually have interns…. yet. Anyways, that was my way of apologizing for not writing over the holidays.
Moving on, we hope you all had a great christmas/hanukkah/kwanzaa/ramadan/snowflake day. We spent the holiday much like we spend every other day… drinking, playing video games, and writing tunes.
Already the new year has brought a bunch of show offers, so in the chrimbus spirit, we jammed last night and ran through a bunch of new songs. It was… interesting. Our new stuff is wacky and uses a bunch of ideas/sounds that we’re figuring out how to re-create live. This is always an interesting stage for songs that we’ve written in the studio… it feels a bit like being a cover band for our own music. By the end of jam things were making sense though, and I’m excited to play these new songs live soon.

New Album Journal #1
After jamming last night and working on some more new songs, I had the idea to document the process of writing our new album with a few pictures and dumb stories. In fact, from now on this journal will be referred to as “dumb stories”. I’M MAKING PROGRESS ALREADY.
Dumb Stories #1
Last night we drove to the jam space listening to Nine Inch Nails (The Downward Spiral). We’ve been listening to all kinds of music new and old for inspiration as we write new songs. While Tristan set up his drums, Dean and I ate cheap subs and talked about when we bought a car together a few years ago for $200. It was great until the breaks failed and we had to crash into a poll to stop. Then, the writing began. We warmed up on some old stuff, and then worked on three new songs. Working titles: Architect, The Party, …and the third we’ve just been referring to as the “bowww-WEEEooooWEEE, bowww-WEEoOoWEEE one”. I’m going to keep these short, so here’s some pics:
